Cuvânt înainte ENGLISH FOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. STUDENT’S BOOK

So far I’ve learnt that an interactive teaching/ learning activity that will value my students’ interventions should focus on creating a scientific context that would stimulate the debates within my ESP seminars and lectures.

One of the aims of these projects has been to develop materials both for testing the second language competence of mechanical and maritime engineers and for teaching them the language that they require for their professional certification. I do not assume that my users will have an indepth knowledge of mechanical and maritime engineering matters. Therefore, the units have been devised to help students improve their knowledge and use of English in an engineering environment. Each unit covers vocabulary related to a certain topic area- ranging from basic maritime and mechanical engineering vocabulary to conversations on board, safety at work, types of ships and so on- and is designed to reinforce the grammar knowledge of students and improve their communicative skills.

I come to realize that the more realistic situations and contexts I’ll be using, the more realistic my teaching materials and methods will become. My lectures are addressed to pre-intermediate and intermediate students that already have a basic knowledge of English grammar and, therefore, they are thematically-centered on developing the reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities that they need to communicate in their studying field. In other words, the lectures aim to help them:

• Increase their knowledge of technical English.
• Discuss familiar things, key engineering concepts and principles.
• Communicate with fellow students and engineers in other countries.
• And, nevertheless, become more fluent and accurate in a wide range of technical fields.

A frecventat Universitatea Ovidius, Constanţa, în perioada 1997-2001, cu diplomă de licenţă, domeniile principale studiate fiind: limba engleză contemporană; literatura engleză şi americană; teoria literaturii; limba română veche şi contemporană; literatura română şi limba latină.
În perioada 2001-2003 a fost profesor suplinitor la Universitatea Ovidius, Constanţa, Facultatea de Drept şi Administraţie Publică, iar în perioada 2003-2006 a fost preparator universitar la Departamentul de limbi moderne pentru facultăţi nefilologice, deservind Facultatea de Construcţii şi Facultatea de Educaţie Fizică şi Sport.
Din octombrie 2006 până în prezent este asistent universitar doctor la Facultatea de Litere, Departamentul de limbi moderne, deservind Facultatea de Construcţii.
În perioada 2001-2002 a urmat cursurile de Master, elaborând lucrarea cu tema: Teorii ale culturii, cultura mass-media, cultura de masă, doctrine politice, artă contemporană.
Ca urmare a participării la unele cursuri de specializare iniţiate de Generative Linguistics in Eastern Europe (GLEE):  iulie-august 2008 în Poznan (Polonia) şi iulie-august 2009 în Debrecen (Ungaria), a obţinut Certificate of the 15th Central European Summer School in Generative Grammar şi Certificate of the 16th Central European Summer School în Generative Grammar.
Din 2007 până în 2011 a urmat studii doctorale pe domeniul „Lingvistică generală, morfologie, sintaxă, semantică, pragmatică”, titlul tezei de doctorat susţinută în septembrie 2011 fiind: „Structura internă a propoziţiilor gerunziale şi participiale în limbile engleză şi română”, coordonator ştiinţific prof. univ. dr. Luminiţa Cărăuşu.
A publicat o serie de lucrări şi studii ştiinţifice în domeniul specialităţii sale.
